Welcome. I am
Adèle Kent KC, a retired Canadian judge.

New Adventures
After a long career in the Canadian justice system, I have decided to spend my retirement years doing a couple of things.
My job as a judge was to decide cases; taking the facts that I heard from witnesses and applying the law. Sometimes it was very challenging, but for me, it was the job of a lifetime. Since retiring, I have been sharing what I learned about deciding cases and writing the reasons with administrative decision-makers, who like judges, need to provide a clear explanation of their decisions.
I also have begun to take on some private dispute resolution cases, which I see as a natural extension to my years as a trial judge.

About Judging
I have always thought it was important to create spaces to talk about judging and the judicial process in a way that sustains a strong understanding of how judges do their job and why. I am particularly interested in the ethical world of judges and what that means in the 21st century. From time to time, I might do something different, like talk about an interesting book I have read or podcast that I have listened to. I invite you to read my blog, comment and ask questions. My opinions are my own, I will not comment on cases in progress, and I am always keen to engage in vigourous discussion. My expectation is that those who wish to engage will do so in a courteous and thoughtful way.
